About

The rail industry touches millions of lives in Australia and New Zealand every day.

Rail is a major part of our economies, and plays an essential and growing role in connecting our cities and towns.

As we move towards net-zero by 2050, reliance on rail is only going to increase. In Australia alone, we need 70,000 more people to help build and manage our rail networks and services over the next decade.

When you join the rail industry, you become part of a legacy that has existed since the first line opened in 1831. Rail has long-supported vital industries including agriculture, resources, manufacturing, trade, and travel.

The rail industry includes:

  • passenger and freight network operators
  • infrastructure designers and contractors
  • manufacturers
  • suppliers
  • tourism and education providers

There’s an estimated 33,000 kilometres of track in Australia which provides crucial connections across our country.

New Zealand has almost 4000 kilometres of track.

Rail supports an incredible 170,000 local jobs from more than 900 businesses that operate in the industry.

Our people enjoy long and rewarding careers while doing meaningful work that contributes to people’s lives in many ways.
