Track inspector

A track inspector inspects sections of the rail network to ensure it’s safe and maintained. They complete patrols on foot and by rail vehicle.
Also known as: Track examiner, Track certifier, Way maintainer, Perway patroller

Is this role right for you?

Track inspectors have a great deal of autonomy, so this role will suit you if you enjoy planning and prioritising your own day. You need to be a self-starter who can demonstrate initiative, time management, and organisational skills. You also need strong attention to detail and a flexible can-do attitude. You’ll work well in a team environment, and care about the safety and maintenance of our rail network.

What are some example projects or experiences?

Track inspectors complete scheduled track patrols and inspections to ensure our rail networks are safe. They can detect any issue with rail infrastructure – from track joints to crossings and even signage. Once they detect an issue, they’ll record it and provide guidance and support for maintenance or repair. They’re comfortable driving a rail vehicle, and may work set hours or shift work that sometimes includes evenings and weekends.

What is the work environment like?

You’ll be part of a team that builds and maintains infrastructure along the rail network. You’ll work within the rail corridor alongside trains or on construction sites. In most roles you’ll wear protective and safety equipment such as a hardhat, gloves, and hi-visibility clothing. Sometimes you’ll be exposed to heat, cold, wind and rain. You may be required to do shift work, including nights, weekends, rotating rosters and public holidays.

Eligibility & pathways

Track inspectors need to have completed a Certificate III in Rail Infrastructure or skill sets from this qualification. Previous experience in rail is also required. You may need extra training and qualifications if you will work in tunnels, at heights, or in confined spaces. You will need a general construction induction card (White Card) to access most work locations. It could be beneficial to have a heavy vehicle licence, forklift licence, elevated work platform ticket, and first aid training.
