A salesperson sells products or services for their organisation. They identify and engage with potential customers, and manage relationships with existing customers.

You’ll need to be a confident communicator and a great listener. You’ll have strong empathy so you can intuit what your customers may be thinking or feeling. You will also need to be patient and persistent, and enjoy working with people.

What are some example projects or experiences?

Salespeople support all types of rail organisations.

You could land a role selling construction materials that are vital to building our rail networks.

Or, you could find yourself selling innovative railway infrastructure solutions for a rail maintenance company.

What is the work environment like?

You may work alone or in a team of salespeople. You’ll usually be given sales targets, and will need to manage your time well to achieve your goals.

Sometimes you’ll work in an office, researching potential customers and engaging with them by phone or email. Other times you will meet customers at their office or another location. You may need to regularly attend conferences and networking events. Salespeople usually travel a lot as part of their role.

You can find work as a salesperson all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.

Eligibility & pathways

You usually don’t need any qualifications to be a salesperson. But a diploma or degree in sales, marketing, communications, or commerce will give you useful skills for the role.
