Financial analyst

A financial analyst compiles and analyses data to help inform business planning and decision making.

You’ll enjoy gathering data, organising information, and analysing results. You’ll be comfortable using specialised tools to make forecasts, and will be a confident communicator who can share information and ideas with others. You will also have great attention to detail and like solving problems.

What are some example projects or experiences?

Financial analysts work in all types of rail organisations. You could find yourself building out financial models to determine the budget for a large rail infrastructure project. Or you could land a role with a locomotive manufacturer, analysing data to make operations more cost effective and efficient.

What is the work environment like?

You’ll work in an office, usually in a team with other finance professionals. Sometimes you’ll be gathering data from historical financial reports, accounting ledgers, or industry research. Then you will use tools, such as software or spreadsheets, to input the data ready for analysis. Most of your time will be spent analysing the data and using it to make predictions and forecasts. You will also produce reports, and may participate in meetings or workshops to share information and contribute your expertise. You can find work as a financial analyst all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns.

Eligibility & pathways

Financial analysts usually have a degree in business, accounting, economics, or finance. Some financial analysts also complete a post-graduate qualification as a chartered financial analyst (CFA).
