You’ll need to be a skilled negotiator and enjoy collaborating with others. You’ll have great attention to detail, and a passion for deconstructing legal language. You’ll also need to gain excellent knowledge of contract laws, and be eager to learn about a business so you can apply your expertise effectively.

What are some example projects or experiences?

Contracts officers play an important role in rail organisations that help build and maintain our rail network. They support all stages of a rail project – from developing subcontractor packages and procurement schedules, to overseeing supply contracts for construction materials. You could land a role helping to manage all the partners and subcontractors for a vital rail infrastructure project. Or, you could find yourself working for a rail maintenance company helping to ensure supply contracts are lawful and fair.

What is the work environment like?

You’ll work in an office, perhaps within a legal or procurement team. You may be required to research, prepare and review contracts, and manage or update existing contracts. Sometimes you’ll engage with external parties, such as suppliers. You’ll negotiate the terms of a contract and make sure it complies with laws and protects your organisation. Once contracts commence you will help ensure targets are met, work is completed and laws are followed. You can find work as a contracts officer all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns.

Eligibility & pathways

Contracts officers may require a diploma or degree in contract management or finance. Our industry values diverse personal and work experience. Many employers can provide you with opportunities to gain new qualifications and industry experience to help you succeed.
