Carpenter

Carpenters use tools to build frames, walls, and structures with timber and other materials. They start with plans and drawings and then select, prepare, and assemble materials into finished structures.
Also known as: Joiner, Framer

Is this role right for you?

As a carpenter, you’ll combine your manual skills and mathematical knowledge to turn a plan on paper into a physical structure. You know how to plan carefully and communicate clearly with other tradespeople.

What are some example projects or experiences?

Carpenters work on some of the largest rail structures, such as bridges and tunnels. Many bridges are constructed with timber and require regular inspections and maintenance. Newer bridges and tunnels need carpenters to build formwork and framing during construction. Carpenters work closely with engineers, concreters, and asphalters. Some carpenters help build the interiors of trains. They construct frames and connect prefabricated panels to form the seating, corridors, stairways, and access ways of modern passenger trains.

What is the work environment like?

As an apprentice, you’ll learn your trade from experienced trainers and senior carpenters. You’ll spend time in classrooms, workshops, and construction sites as you complete your training and start your career. Once qualified, you’ll often be in a workshop or rail construction site with other tradespeople, technicians and engineers. Some roles are in remote regions. Construction sites are dynamic places where engineers, project managers, tradespeople, and labourers work together to build something new. Most sites are exposed to extremes of wind, rain, heat and cold. Workers wear protective equipment and follow rigorous safety procedures.
