You will need to be reliable and hard-working. You’ll work under the direction of senior team members and tradespeople, but you must be self-motivated and take initiative on a work site. You will develop expertise with the machinery you operate as you complete diverse tasks. You’ll enjoy planning your work and value safety first.

You’ll be part of a team that manufactures and maintains rail infrastructure. You’ll work within the rail corridor, or on construction sites and in maintenance facilities. In most roles you’ll wear protective and safety equipment such as a hardhat, gloves, and hi-visibility clothing. You can find work as a machine operator all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.

Some machine operator roles don’t require qualifications. However, a certificate in rail infrastructure is required for some roles. You may also need specialised training and licences to operate forklifts, backhoes, cranes, concrete booms, elevated work platforms, and heavy vehicles. With extra training and qualifications you may work in tunnels, at heights, and in confined spaces. You will need a general construction induction card (White Card) to access many work locations. Your employer will usually provide rail specific safety and induction training. Our industry values diverse personal and work experience.
